Abstract:
Introduction: Aging is a process that is associated with decreased sexual function and activity due to changes in sex hormones. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of six weeks of circular resistance training on testosterone levels and sexual function in elderly men.
Methodology: This is a quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design. The statistical sample of this study consisted of 30 elderly men with an average weight of 80.1 ± 6.7 kg and a body mass index of 26.4 ± 1.4 kg / m2. Which were randomly divided into two groups of control (n = 15) and circular resistance training group (n = 15). The circular resistance training group performed the resistance training program for 6 weeks and 3 sessions per week. Serum testosterone levels were measured by ELISA and sexual function using the International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire before and after exercise. Data were analyzed using correlated t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with SPSS software version 22 (P <0.05).
Results: The results of the present study showed that circular resistance training significantly increased the score of erectile function (P = 0.01) and testosterone level (P = 0.02) in the training group compared to the control group. It also showed that there was a significant difference between orgasm performance (P = 0.010) and total scores (P = 0.004) in post-test in the study groups. While between erectile function (P = 0.870), marital satisfaction (P = 0.968), general satisfaction (P = 0.959) and sexual desire ( P = 0.158) No significant difference was observed in the post-test of the studied groups (P ≤ 0.05).
Conclusion: In general, based on the results of the present study, it seems that circular resistance training with increasing serum testosterone levels improves erectile dysfunction and sexual function in older men.
