Background and Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Instagram consumption on body image and sports participation in high school adolescents in Rasht. Method: This research is descriptive and correlational and is considered as an applied goal. The statistical population of this study included all high school students in Rasht (16734) and the statistical sample was randomly selected from all high school students who were 376 according to Morgan's table. For Instagram, the Sheikhzadeh Ismaili Questionnaire (2017) was used, and for body image, the body image questionnaire (1987) was used, and the sports participation questionnaire was prepared as a researcher. Analysis of data and description of findings using descriptive statistics, determination of reliability by Cronbach's alpha method, investigation of data distribution using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test in SPSS software and path analysis of variables using structural equation modeling with pls software Done. Results: The results showed that there was a significant and positive relationship between Instagram consumption and 4 dimensions of body image (fitness assessment, satisfaction, mental weight and appearance evaluation) with coefficient (0.21) and T-values = 4.78, but There was a significant and negative relationship between Instagram consumption and the seemingly trend dimension. There was a significant relationship between body image and sports participation with coefficient (0.47) and T-values = 9.91. There was no significant relationship between Instagram consumption and sports participation with a coefficient of (0.04) and T-values = 0.69, but Instagram consumption had a significant relationship with sports participation through the mediation of body image. Conclusion: According to the findings, the more Instagram users use, the more adolescents tend to improve their appearance. Body image in adolescents can force them to manage the body through the right way, namely sports participation. In general, because teens are exposed to manipulated images of Instagram and Western cultures, and by modeling those images, they try to achieve their ideal body, they participate in continuous sports activities. Thus, body image disorder is not a negative concept in itself and may have beneficial dimensions; Balanced levels of body image disorder may motivate teens to exercise regularly. |
