Abstract:
Introduction: One of the social problems today in many countries of the world, including our country, is the consumption of sports supplements, which causes many problems for athletes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of steroid supplementation and exercise protocol on the psychopathological profile in female bodybuilders.
Methods: In this analytical-descriptive study, 150 adult female bodybuilders were selected by using purposive stratified sampling as a statistical sample. To collect data, were used electronic questionnaire in four sections; Demographic information, athletes 'supplement intake, type of training protocol and mmpi-2 mental health questionnaire (short form) to evaluate the athletes' psychopathological profile. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation coefficient, Multivariate regression and Structural Equation Modeling.
Results: The results showed that the female bodybuilder's psychopathological profile was significant relationship with steroid supplements and training protocols (p≥ 0.05). The results of regression showed that the total score of training protocols and steroid supplementation have 0.1% and 1.6% for Hs; 0% and 5.3% for D; 7.6% and 17.7% for Hy; 7.9% and 36.6% for Pd; 12% and 31% for Pa; 12.6% and 35.7% for Pt; 19.2% and 38.8% for Sc; 17.7% and 18.3% for the Ma respectively. In addition, the effect of steroid supplements on the psychopathological profile was significantly higher than exercise protocol (p≥ 0.05). These findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between steroid supplementation and exercise protocols with the psychopathological profile of bodybuilders and these variables play an important role in the pathological psychiatric profile. Therefore, it is recommended that coaches and athletes exercise caution in taking steroid supplements and using exercise protocols.
