Abstract:
Background: In previous research, the impact of environmental factors is also more physical or hard environment such as facilities and infrastructure; and soft environments such as the quantity and quality of programs on sports participation.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the structure and processes of the social environment on the rate and continuity of people's participation in sports and recreational activities.
Methodology: In this study, the results of 10 articles on the role of social, economic and cultural factors on the impact of social environment on people's participation in sports activities are described and classified and then analyzed.
Results: The results of this review show that the determinants of social environment can be broadly divided into three main factors: The first factor is interpersonal relationships that include the dimensions of social networks and social support. There is strong evidence that social support interventions increase the level of physical activity, and that "friend systems," walking groups, and sports contracts with another person can increase the time spent on physical activity. The second factor is social inequality, the effective dimensions of which include socio-economic status (SEP), income inequality and discrimination or injustice. Poverty reduces access to health care resources, which in turn leads to poor health, experiencing racial discrimination can lead to emotional distress. Finally, the third factor relates to the characteristics of the place of residence and neighbors and includes the dimensions of social cohesion, social capital and neighborhood variables.
Conclusion: The mechanism of influence of each of these factors and its dimensions is beyond one-dimensional analysis on demographic characteristics or psychological and intrapersonal conditions of participation in sports.
