Introduction & Objective: It seems that people with mental disabilities need physical fitness equal to or more than healthy people for prevention of diseases and premature death. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of high intensity interval training (HIIT) on the physical and cardiac fitness levels of mentally retarded men. The research method was quasi-experimental. The statistical population of the study was the mentally retarded men of Soroush Center from the welfare centers of Torbat Heydariyeh city. Using an available and targeted sampling method, 20 people were selected as a statistical sample and randomly divided into two groups of control. In this study, in order to evaluate physical fitness, Bulk field test, RAST, situ up, static balance, Swedish swimming were used and Inbody device was used to measure the percentage of fat and muscle mass. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 25 . Shapiro–Wilk, Wilcoxon signed-rank, paired and independent t-tests were used to analyze the data. Results: The results showed that 8 weeks of HIIT training had no significant effect on aerobic strength, shoulder girdle muscle endurance, abdominal muscle endurance, weight, fat percentage and muscle mass of mentally retarded people (p> 0.05). Also, eight weeks of HIIT had a positive and significant effect on anaerobic strength, leg muscle endurance and static balance in people with mental disabilities (p <0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that performing the HIIT protocol of this study can be used as part of exercise to maintain and develop the physical fitness of the mentally retarded. |
