Abstract:
Introduction and Objective: Chronic low back pain is one of the most important causes of absenteeism, disability, depression and visiting a doctor and using insurance and health services. It has many negative effects and consequences for the individual and society. Today, the benefits of using movement therapy and exercise therapy as complementary methods for the treatment of low back pain along with conventional therapies have been well established. The comparison of chair exercises with Pilates in the present study was performed with the aim of identifying a more effective training method for patients with chronic low back pain.
Research Methodology: In this study, 20 female employees with low back pain working in Shahed University and Navaco Information Technology Company of Tehran were purposefully selected and randomly divided into two groups: Chair exercises and Pilates exercise. Individuals in each group performed their own exercise programs for 8 weeks under the supervision of the researcher. Pain intensity was measured by the Quebec questionnaire and functional disability was measured by the Oswestry questionnaire. Independent sample t-test was used for statistical analysis at the level of 0.05.
Findings: The results showed that after 8 weeks, there was a significant difference in pain intensity in the chair and Pilates exercise group (P = 0.001). The pain intensity in the Pilates exercise group was significantly reduced compared to the chair exercise group, while there was no significant difference between the two groups in the rate of functional disability of the subjects (P = 0.082).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that Pilate’s exercises are a more effective method in treating pain in patients with chronic low back pain than chair exercises and its use as a complementary program along with common treatments can be very beneficial.
