Abstract
Background: One of the most common and costly musculoskeletal problems in today’s society is low back pain, the direct and indirect costs of this syndrome are comparable to the costs spent in cardiovascular diseases, depression and diabetes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a course of Swiss ball training and ear acupuncture on pain and central muscle endurance in women with chronic non-specific low back pain.
Methods: Forty five subjects ranging from 30 to 55 years old participated in the study voluntarily and were randomly divided into three groups (Swiss ball, ear acupuncture and control).Due to the intervention, the existence of the control group, the purposeful selection of subjects and the nature of the research, the present research method is quasi-experimental. Before and after the two therapeutic interventions, Visual Analog Scale and McGill Tests were used to measure pain and central muscle endurance, respectively. The results were analyzed using paired T-test and ANOVA at the level of significance (p<0/05) in SPSS software version 22.
Results: Findings indicated that the improvement of central muscle endurance and reduction of pain intensity in experimental groups from pretest to posttests was significantly different (p=0/001), but this difference was not observed in the control group. There was no significant difference between the two experimental groups in the posttest (p>0/05).
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the central muscles in patients with low back pain have poor endurance and as a result, if the patients want to increase the endurance of the central muscles and reduce pain, they are forced to adopt strategies that can have new destructive consequences for them. After Swiss ball training and ear acupuncture, significant changes have been made in reducing the severity of pain and increasing central muscle endurance, which can be considered as a helpful technique to help care the patients by physicians and social work professionals.
