Abstract |
It was argued in this study that e-sports, regardless of whether they are eligible for sporting, must be considered in sports management because they have the potential to become sporting. Sporting means a) observing, organizing, and arranging a non-sports activity in a way to treat as a sports activity, and providing a fair, pleasant, and safe environment for people to compete and cooperate, and having the capacity to compare people's performance; or b) a sports component is added to a non-sports activity to make it more attractive to the audience. Since the sports industry has accepted e-sports as sports activities, researchers should accept e-sports as a representation of sports and investigate its negative and positive impacts on the sports industry. Accepting the discussion of e-sports in the discourse of sports management does not necessarily imply that sports management researchers support this phenomenon, but it merely indicates the readiness to accept the study of this issue. If sports management researchers are not prepared to experience such a phenomenon and stand on the safe side of academic debates, they will fail to examine the consequences of e-sports on obesity (as a result of physical disability), social inclusion, or its contribution to the professional sports industry. Therefore, it is required to consider the field of e-sports by using its definition and through a wider and multifaceted view. In the following, the introduction section is presented, and then the relationship between sports management and e-sports, if any, will be discussed. Then, definitions of sports and e-sports are provided from researchers' and sports organizations' perspectives. The next section is dealt with the issue of sporting, and finally, the research conclusion is presented. |
