Abstract:
Title:
The effect of kinesio taping on post Stroke balance deficit: A narrative review
Objective:
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of kinesio taping on the balance problems of patients with stroke
Background:
Cerebrovascular accident (stroke) is the second leading reason of death and the third leading reason of disability. Stroke which is the sudden death of some brain cells due to insufficient oxygen when the blood flow to the brain is lost by blockage or rupture of an artery to the brain, could impose negative effect on balance function. Kinesio taping (KT) as a complementary therapy has been used widely in the treatment of balance problems after stroke.
Method:
In the current present review study, advanced search using PubMed and Google Scholar databases carried out via electronic search engines over past two decades (from 2000 until 2022). The following keywords were used for our search” Kinesio taping”, “Stroke”,” Balance”, “Taping”, which were accompanied by related synonyms. In addition, in order to search Persian articles, Iranian journal data banks were utilized.
Results:
A total number of 17 studies were chosen based on our measures and objectives. All the studies showed that kinesio taping of different regions of the body such as ankle, quadriceps muscle and trunk could improve the balance of the patients with stroke in short term, especially when it was combined with other treatments including Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation.
Conclusion:
Based on current evidence, kinesio taping was more effective than conventional rehabilitation for balance function in poststroke patients. However, more well-conducted RCTs are required to investigate its long-term effects on balance function.
