Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: In type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) insulin resistance (IR) increase. IR increase erythrocytes. Regular exercise can reduce IR and changes erythrocytes. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of three types of training include: aerobic, resistance and combine training on reduce IR and erythrocytes in T2DM.
METHODS: 52 sedentary, T2DM, elderly (50 to 65 years old) males with at least one year of disease history with average F.B.S 161.2±8, participated in this study. Then they divided randomly in four groups (aerobic, resistance, combine exercise and control groups). Training groups performed their specific programs three sessions per week for ten weeks. Aerobic exercise consisted of walking/jogging on the Grass field. During the first 2 weeks, the intensity of aerobic exercise was 55–60% of maximum heart rate (HR-max). Thereafter training intensity increased at 60–85% HR-max (pre-training HR-max) according to the individual adaptation observed during training sessions. The strength training program consisted of six resistance exercise stations: leg press, chest press, seated row, leg extension, pull-down, and leg curl. All subjects performed 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions for all the exercises at an intensity of 50-75% 1-RM. The rest period between sets lasted 3 min, with 2–3 min intervals between each exercise.Combine training includes one session aerobic and one session resistance. Blood samples were taken from all participants before and after ten weeks. Collected data were analyst by paired t test and ANOVA.
RESULTS: all training groups maintained Hb and increased in control group. The hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) significantly increased and IR, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) reduced. The number of red blood cells (RBC) tended to decrease in all training groups, but the decrease was significant only in combine group.
CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study three types of exercise maintain Hb. programs had benefit similar effects on IR, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC in T2DM, but with regarding to the significant decrease in RBC – which is usually higher in patients with type 2 diabetic and increased in control group- in combine group, this type of training is recommend to T2DM.
