Abstract |
Background: Social scientists are aware that opportunities for sports participation are not evenly distributed among the population, and socioeconomic status has a huge effect on sport and physical activity. This means that people with higher socioeconomic status have a higher rate of sports participation than people with lower socioeconomic status because belonging to different bases leads to unequal access to resources and opportunities, and this relationship has been proven in both men and women. Social level is one of the effective factors for achieving opportunities in sports. If households have had a lower income, their children will have less opportunity to join a sports club and they can't do some sports such as skiing, boating, etc. because many sports activities require money and equipment. Purpose: The aim of this study was the effect of Household Income on Participation in Canoe sport. Methodology: In this study, Household income variable estimated with the average annual income of an Iranian household and participation in canoe variable estimated with the number of organized athletes participating in the canoe. These variables were collected from the Statistics Center of Iran for 28 provinces from 2010 to 2017 and therefore we have examined 224 observations. Results were estimated with the ordinary least squares (OLS) method in EVIEWS software. Results: The research results showed that there isn’t any significant effect between rural household income and participation in canoe but the effect of urban household income on participation in canoe sport is positive and significant and the increase of urban household income leads to an increase in the rate of participation in canoe sport. Conclusion: Due to the nature of the sport of canoe, urban areas tend to participate in canoe more than rural areas. In general, in the relationship between socio-economic status and sports participation, family income is an important factor in explaining sports participation. |
