Abstract:
Aims and Background: Cardiovascular diseases especially atherosclerosis, are the main causative of disability and death in all over the world and they have increasing spread in Iran. Hs-CRP and Lipid profile are to risk factors for prediction of atherosclerosis. Grape seed extract has a very high potential in Reduce or inhibit of Hs-CRP and Lipid profile. The main aim of this study was to determine the effect of grape seed extract consumption on hs-CRP and Lipid Profile in young men.
Methods: In this study,30 healthy non-athlete male with an average age 17-23 randomly divided into three groups of supplement 1, supplement 2 and control. The program of consumption of grape seed extract was in supplement group 1 (400 mg per day), supplement group 2 (200 mg per day) for 6 weeks while the placebo group received a corresponding placebo. Before and after the intervention, hs-CRP, TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C were measured. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and paired-samples T test methods (p<0.05).
Results: The results showed that consumption of grape seed extract in supplement groups 1 and 2 significantly reduced C-reactive protein and increased HDL-cholesterol, and only in supplement group 1 caused a significant decrease in triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. However, no significant change was observed in the control group.
Conclusion: The results showed that daily consumption of 400 mg compared to 200 mg of grape seed extract supplement for 6 weeks had a better effect on reducing hs-CRP and lipid profile of young men. Therefore, daily consumption of 400 mg of grape seed extract is recommended to reduce hs-CRP and lipid profile of young men. However, in order to be able to discuss and conclude with more certainty about the factors affecting the increase and decrease of these factors and its application in sports, more studies are needed.
