Abstract:
Aim: Ankle sprain is one of the common musculoskeletal injuries in volleyball players, which if left untreated can lead to long-term inactivity and impose economic costs for treatment. This injury is often caused by a decrease in the accuracy of the sensory receptors, resulting in a loss of balance. Since the modified FIFA 11+ protocol has been effective in reducing ankle injuries in previous studies, the present study investigates the effect of the modified six week FIFA 11+ protocol on anterior/posterior and internal/external ankle balance in adolescent male volleyball players.
Method: Twenty-four male volleyball players (ages 14-18) were selected from the volleyball teams and randomly divided into experimental (n=12) and control (n=12) groups. During the pre-test, internal/external and anterior/posterior ankle balance were measured in two groups by Biodex balance system. Then experimental group performed FIFA 11+ modified training sessions for six week. The control group also did their routine exercises. Subjects were re-examined to evaluate the changes. ANCOVA test was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed that six week of FIFA 11+ modified warm-up training had a positive effect on the internal/external balance of the ankle in adolescent male volleyball players (P = 0.007) (E.S = 0.194). The anterior /posterior balance of the ankle also improved after these exercises (P = 0.036) (E.S = 0.298).
Conclusion: According to the results, FIFA 11+ modified warm-up training improve the anterior/posterior and internal/external ankle balance in volleyball players, so these exercises can be used to prevent ankle injury and also improve ankle balance in volleyball players.
