Abstract:
Background: Bodybuilding has increasingly become popular among males since male body shape has become a subject of interest in the last decades. Bodybuilders have desired to gain more muscle and pay attention to their body shape. Based on this purpose, Personality traits such as perfectionism and narcissism can cause self-concern. Although recent research has demonstrated that desiring a more muscular body shape exhibits eating behavior problems and body dissatisfaction issues in bodybuilders, limited research exists on the relationship between Body Image Concern and Perfectionism and Narcissistic Personality in males bodybuilders.
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationship between Perfectionism and Narcissistic Personality with Body Image Concerns in male bodybuilders.
Methods: This is a descriptive research of correlational type for which a total of 142 male bodybuilders were selected via snowball sampling method and an online survey. In order to examine the research hypothesis and accomplish the research objective, the participants were provided with a questionnaire composed of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI-16), Body Image Concern Inventory (BICI), and Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS). Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression.
Results: There was a positive relationship between perfectionism and narcissistic personality, with total scores of body image concern. Perfectionism and narcissistic personality were positively correlated with body image concern (p < 0.05 level).
Conclusion: Results indicated that perfectionism and narcissistic personality were positively related to body image concern. It is hoped that the results of this research will increase the clinical understanding of this understudied population.
