Abstract:
Introduction:
Predicting the success and good performance of athletes is one of the interesting topics for sports psychologists and coaches. The performance of athletes can be influenced by various environmental and personal factors. In this regard optimism of athletes has been considered by researchers. it is expected that optimism is closely related to some other variables like levels of some mental skills. On the other hand, levels of goal-setting imagery and mental practice of athletes provide the basis for success. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between optimism, goal setting, imagery and mental practice levels in a sample of athletes in contact sports.
Methods:
The statistical population of the present study was Iranian athletes in contact sports with personal page in social networks, from which 158 people were selected by convenience sampling. The method of the present study was descriptive-correlational and applied research. Data collecting were done by questionnaires of emotional intelligence in sports and Ottawa mental skills (OMSAT-3). Results were analyzed by Pearson correlation coefficient and linear regression at a significance level of 0.05.
Results:
The results showed that optimism correlated significantly with athletes' goal setting, imagery and mental practice and higher levels of optimism were associated with more goal setting, imagery and mental practice. The results of regression analysis showed that optimism is a significant predictor of athletes' goal setting, imagery and mental practice.
Conclusion:
Optimism acts as an influential variable in athletes' performance. Athletes with high optimism have high levels of some psychological skills. The results of the present study is consistent with past findings. In conclusion, the relationships observed in this study emphasize the need for the inclusion of optimism training in mental skills interventions and this pattern of results provides important concepts for use by sports psychologists.
