Abstract:
Employees of offices and organizations are overweight and obese due to lack of mobility and sitting behind a desk. Obesity leads to a significant increase in medical costs and a decrease in employee productivity in the workplace. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and its relationship with mental health of employees of sports and youth departments in Kurdistan province.
Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The statistical population of this research consists of employees of sports and youth departments of Kurdistan province. Integer sampling method was used. The instrument used in this study is the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire GHQ-28. Body mass index (BMI) was used to determine the weight ratio.
Results: 125 people participated in this study, of which 76% were men and 24% were women. The average age of employees is 40.92 years. Work experience in the range of 5-9 years with 36% has the highest frequency. The rate of education in the master's degree is higher with 40.8%. After calculating the body mass index of employees was observed 35.2% in the range of fitness, 56% in the range Overweight and 8.8% are in the range of first-degree obesity. The average BMI is 26.08, which is in the overweight range. Pearson correlation test showed that there was a significant and negative correlation between mental health and BMI (r = 0.342 and p <0.001). Also, there is a significant and negative correlation between BMI index with physical dimension (p <0.001 r = 0.426) and social function (r = -0.373 and p <0.001). The relationship between BMI and anxiety and depression indices (p <0.05) was not significant.
Conclusion: This study showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity is associated with mental health in office workers, which requires programs to improve fitness and thus increase mental health.
