Abstract |
Background: Regular physical activity is one of the indicators of health in childhood and adolescence; low physical fitness threaten many disorders at childhood or future ages. Physical inactivity is directly correlated with low physical fitness. Enhanced public welfare in recent years, in addition to adults, has put children at risk for a sedentary lifestyle and related diseases. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the level of physical activity in 11-17-year-old girl adolescents in Varamin city. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional descriptive survey conducted online due to prevent Covid-19 infection among adolescents aged 11 years and older in Varamin city in January and February 2022. Subjects were selected by snowball sampling. Participants were invited to the study using Shad and WhatsApp social apps. The level of physical activity was self-reported based on the standard questionnaires of Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance and Global School-based Student Health Survey. The typical level of physical activity for this age group is also used according to the latest World Health Organization physical activity guidelines announced in November 2020. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 22 software. Results: In the present study, 185 adolescent girls (15.4 ± 1.8 years) participated. The results showed that 27% of participants had no daily physical activity, and 75% of them had at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity for less than three days a week. Only 6% of participants followed the World Health Organization's physical activity guidelines. Conclusion: The findings show the Varaminan female adolescents have the undesirable status of physical activity; therefore, to prevent the irreversible effects of a sedentary lifestyle, emphasis should be placed on physical education curricula and the role of physical games in activating society and lifestyle modification in this age group should be educated and cultured. |
